about

Judges 3:12-30

lyrics

King Eglon conquered Israel;
The LORD had strengthened Eglon’s hand.
As Israel bowed to foreign gods,
So now they served a foreign man.

For eighteen years, King Eglon ruled;
Eighteen long years they were not free.
They cried at last unto the LORD,
And He responded to their plea.

A man named Ehud, God raised up;
They would send tribute to the king.
He would go forth to Eglon’s court,
A message from the LORD to bring.

He made a sword one cubit long,
Two edges sharp as they could be.
He hid it well on his right thigh,
For a left-handed man was he.

Away he went to Eglon’s court.
He paid his tribute; he paid it well.
Then Ehud went upon his way
Until the idols of Gilgal.

There he dismissed his company;
To Eglon’s court he returned alone.
A secret message he announced;
The king’s attendants left the room.

“Hear now, O king, a word from God.”
The king, he rose up from his seat.
Then Ehud drew the fearsome sword
And thrust it straight into the king.

Eglon was not a slender man;
His fat enveloped Ehud’s sword.
The handle sank into his flesh;
The king fell dead upon the floor.

As Ehud left, he locked the door.
He passed the idols of the king.
He went with haste to Ephraim’s hills
And blew the horn of victory.

Then Israel rose up to the call;
King Eglon’s men did not escape.
As Israel blocked the Jordan’s fords,
The LORD delivered them that day.

Take head to hear of Israel’s rest;
For eighty years they lived in peace.
For they had cried unto the LORD,
And He responded to their plea.
